Dry Machining with Boric Acid
Powder or vapor delivery of a solid lubricant to continuously renew the tool surface with a sacrificial film may provide truly dry machining capability.

Micro-molding with Metallic Glasses
Metallic glasses may be ideally suited for manufacturing small metal parts by molding.  One reason for this is the lack of grains, which are often on the same order as the part, and another is the relatively low temperature at which they flow.

Computational Wear Predictions in Total Knees
Drs. Fregly and Banks, have been working towards making predictions in wear for patients with total knee replacements. In the tribology laboratory, we have been aiding in this research.  Matt Hamilton, a former graduate student, wrote a brief essay on his summer research as completion of a Scholarship Award he was given in 2001.

Vapor Phase Lubrication
Vapor Phase Lubrication, Gas Phase Lubrication, Gas-Surface Interactions, and many more terms have been used to describe the coupled problem of the environment interacting with a surface to cause changes in the tribological behavior.  In 1999 during the writing of my PhD thesis,  as an exercise in describing my research to general audience, I tried to encapsulate these works into a simple review; this white paper is that review.
