How to Scan

Unless you have a scanner, and an image editor that has the option to save as jpeg, you will need to use the scanners at the UF CIRCA labs.

  1. Find a CIRCA lab that's open at a time and location convenient to you.
  2. Locate a computer that has a scanner attached to it.
  3. Login using your GATORLink account, if you don't have one, sign up for one. The process takes less than 5 minutes. Ask a CIRCA bluecoat for assistance if you have trouble signing up for an account. If you have problems with the Scanner or finding Photoshop (Adobe Photoshop is a program that will help us edit and save pictures, it is installed on all computers at CIRCA), you may ask the CIRCA bluecoats for assistance. You may NOT ask them about html or how to do the assignment.
  4. Open Adobe Photoshop [Start -> Applications -> Adobe Photoshop] .
  5. Lift the Scanner cover and place one of your pictures face down on the glass surface. Close Scanner cover.
  6. On Photoshop's menu bar, find "File" and on the pull down options strip, choose, "Import" and then "Twain 32" [File -> Import -> Twain 32]
  7. This opens a window with the scanning program. If it prompts you help for first time users, say no for now.
  8. In the "Type" field, select "Color Picture" [Type = Color Picture].
  9. In the "Destination" field, select "Screen" [Path = Screen].
  10. Move your cursor over to the right window where the preview picture is. Your cursor should turn into a four edged arrow. This will let you move the scanning marquee around. If you gently move to one of the edges, the cursor will turn into a two edged arrow. Resize the scanning marquee to fit your image.
  11. Hit "Scan".
  12. Repeat the scanning procedure for more pictures. You will have to press the "Preview" button each time you put a new picture in the scanner.
  13. Close the scanning program.
  14. Move your cursor over to the picture you want to save. Select it by clicking on it once.
  15. Go to "File" on the menu bar, choose "Save a Copy" [File -> Save a copy]
  16. In the "Save in" field, choose 31/2 Floppy (A:) [Save in = 31/2 Floppy (A:)].
  17. In the "File name" field, type in a name for your picture [File name= Name of picture].
  18. In the "Save as" field, choose JPEG [Save as= JPEG].
  19. Leave everything else as is. Hit OK.
  20. In the JPEG option window that pops up, choose a quality of 7. Leave everything else, as is. Hit OK [Quality = 7, Hit OK].
  21. Repeat saving procedure for your other pictures.
  22. When you are done, close your pictures in photoshop. It will prompt you to save them in the Photoshop format. Choose no. If you have a zip disk and want to save the pictures as photoshop files(each photoshop file occupies something like 300kb for an average size, sharp millions of colors picture).
  23. FTP the pictures from your disk to your class account. Be sure to have the "Binary" option selected on the FTP program(WS-FTP) and be doubly sure you are tranferring them to your public_html directory.
  24. In your new HTML file, link to your new pictures (using the instructions from the tutorial section listed below).
  25. That's it.
