How to Forward Email

This set of instructions will allow you to check email sent to your grove account by
forwarding that email somewhere else. This does not affect mail sent FROM your grove
account, only mail sent TO your grove account. All class email will be sent to your grove
account. By forwarding that mail to your regular email account you will not have to check
it separately. Again, this does not affect mail sent FROM your grove account, nor does it
affect mail sent TO us (ie your assignments). Rather you do this or not is completely
optional and is only as a conveneince to you. In either case, you still will need to run addme.
- Login to your grove account via telnet.
- Next, create a file called .forward using the simple word processor pico by typing pico
.forward and press enter
Notice that there is a period before the 'f'. It is important. This file is often
referred to as a "dot forward" file.
- Next type in the address of the email account you would like your grove email to be
forwarded to, such as myemail@aol.com or gator@ufl.edu or any other email
account. If you want to forward this email to more than one account then just put each address
on a different line (ie type the address, hit enter and type the next address).
- Exit pico by holding down the control key then pressing the letter 'x' (without quotes).
- Pico will then ask Save modified buffer (ANSWERING "No" WILL DESTROY CHANGES) ?
Answer 'Y' to save the changes, and then press enter to accept the filename (it will show
File Name to write : .forward which is the correct filename).
- Thats all folks!!
If you want to change this later on, then repeat the above except that in step 3 you will
edit the email address listed to the one you want your email forwarded to. If you don't
want the email forwarded at all, login to your account and type rm .forward which
will remove the .forward file thereby cancelling the forwarding.
