The University of Florida Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society is affiliated with The Wildlife Society, Inc, the Southeastern Section, and the State Chapter,
which are part of the network for the professional society for wildlife
biologists. Evening meetings are held bi-monthly throughout the school
year.
TWS
Chapter activities are diverse and provide professional and fun
opportunities for every WEC major. Professional activities include
inviting experts to speak on a wildlife topic at meetings (such as an
FWC officer),
attending State Chapter meetings, participating in the Southeast
Section Student Wildlife Conclave in the Spring, learning various
wildlife techniques, and getting involved
in political issues that affect wildlife resources. Career-building
skills are also acquired, such as writing resumes and applying to
graduate school. Students that are interested in Environmental
Education can become certified in Project WILD through a one-day
workshop, free of charge.
On the lighter side, the Chapter hosts an annual "Wild
Game Dinner" in the Spring. Members collect meat donations throughout
the year and create exotic dishes in late February using python, gator,
deer, fish, elk, water buffalo, squirrel, quail, and more. Beast Feast
is our biggest fund-raiser of the year, and in 2009 we had over 700 in
attendance. Once a year TWS cleans up an adopted section of road
adjacent to a state natural area, on Millhopper Road. We also
contribute to Toys For Tots, a program that delivers new toys to needy
children. The club provides any assistance at a local
wildlife rehabilitation facility when necessary, and organizes other
social gatherings. Lubee's Bat Fest and CALS Kick-off are two events
that we attend to get out the word about our club, and volunteers are
always needed! Participation in the Student Chapter of TWS is an
excellent way to begin a student's wildlife career. In fact, TWS
welcomes all majors at the University of Florida.
