| Water use by evapotranspiration in complex, multilayered
canopies tends to be greater than in simple, single-layered canopies. This is
because wind can penetrate throughout a complex canopy, creating turbulence and gradients
of moisture exchange. As a consequence, wet habitats throughout the world generally
support forests with understories, while dry regions support grasslands.
