Press Release (Last Year's Release)

Hundreds of elementary, middle and high school students and teachers from around the North Central Florida region will try their hand at engineering design competitions, building and racing mousetrap-powered cars and launching water-propelled rockets at the 14th annual 2008 Regional SECME Olympiad, hosted by the College of Engineering and the engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi at the University of Florida.

The event is designed to pique students' interests in science, engineering, math and technology and is open to the public. Winners at this competition will move on to compete at the national level.

The day's events begin on March 29, 2008 at 8:15 a.m. and conclude with closing ceremonies at 4 p.m. Events will be held in locations around campus including Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, the O'Connell Center, Flavet Field and the Computer Science and Engineering building.

SECME is a national alliance of engineering universities, K-12 educators and corporate investors encouraging students to study science, engineering, math and technology in college. SECME was originally an acronym for Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering, and its mission was to increase the number of historically under-represented racial minorities and women in scientific fields. Today it is known simply as SECME, and its goal is to create a diverse and globally competitive workforce.
