Mission. UF Argentine Tango Club consists of students, faculty and staff from the University of Florida and community members from Gainesville. The purpose of the club is to provide a venue within the campus for learning, practicing, and enjoying the Argentine Tango. Our group is a non-profit student-run organization and we offer free lessons. We also perform at local dance shows and fund-raising activities.
Members. We have several dozen active members. The club has three positions for executive officers: the president, the vice president, and the treasurer. Our club president is Kaylee Vance and treasurer is Rose Mikulski. Past club officers include Federico, Gabi, Jan, Ricardo, Charlotte, Rania, and Yuwen. Currently the lead teachers are Irene and Alper, though we get help from several seasoned dancers in town.
Joining. You can become a member and join our mailing list by sending an e-mail to LISTSERV@LISTS.UFL.EDU with the command SUBSCRIBE TANGO-L in the main body of your e-mail (no subject needed). We currently have 246 subscribers. You can always leave the list sending SIGNOFF TANGO-L command to the same address.
Headquarters. We meet regularly on Fridays at the Student Recreation and Fittness Center (SRFC, next to the Infirmary) in Room #2 between 8:00pm and midnight. (See the map on the right.) The meeting consists of two main activities: free classes for beginners and intermediates and a dance practica for all levels. SRFC is closed during the finals week, spring and winter breaks. Our schedule is subject to change at those times. Best way to keep up with the schedule is to join our mailing list at LISTSERV@LISTS.UFL.EDU. ![]()
Free Classes. Come to one of our Friday meetings at SRFC and start learning Tango with absolutely no cost. The beginners and intermediate classes start at 8:30pm and usually last until 10:00pm. No partners or even special shoes are necessary. Dancing shoes or any regular shoes with non-sticky bottom (in order to facilitate pivoting) are preferable for the ladies. Alternatively, you can bring a pair of thick socks.
Practica. Dancers at all levels dance with each other between 10pm till midnight to practice what is covered in class as well other nice moves. We play both traditional and nuevo tango music, and also some other type of funky music.
Milongas. Milonga is a term often used for an event/party where tango is danced. (The term "milonga" can also refer to a musical genre and a type of dance.) Gainesville has a weekly milonga which you can join on Saturdays in downtown which is organized by TangoYTe . This milonga costs $5 for students and $10 for others (UF tango club has no financial ties to this event). Other Florida milongas worth to mention include those in Tampa and in Miami.
