Ongoing Campaigns
Power Vote
Power Vote is a national movement to mobilize young voters on issues associated with climate change and energy independence for the November election. At UF, we work to educate students -- through tabling, class presentations, and other assorted events -- on the importance of "thinking green" when they vote in November. Stand up at UF and cast your voice for a clean energy economy! Contact: clairelong@gmail.com.
Greening local schools
This semester's community project is working with greening local schools, starting with JJ Finley Elementary School. We are going to be helping them start up recycling awareness and programs there through helping with ideas and research into different sustainable initiatives, as well as through direct interaction with kids in classrooms through readings and projects. It's a long-term project, but it's going to have an awesome impact on our community! Contact Camilla at camillap@ufl.edu for more info.
Water conservation project
This campaign will focus on raising awareness on water conservation issues and behavioral components of water use. Most activities will be tabling and community outreach based. Email Alecia Brantley at aleciaabrantley@ufl.edu.
Poverty relief
GSC will begin supporting a micro-lending program to help individuals and families in communities living in extreme poverty. Loans will be provided to those willing to begin or expand small agricultural businesses in order to support their families and communities, while helping to lift them out of poverty in a responsible manner that is both socially and environmentally sustainable. To get involved, email Anthony Little at earymir@ufl.edu.
Sustainability outreach
David Eardley is currently overseeing the sustainability presentations that are being given to a variety of groups around campus. The presentations consist of a powerpoint and Q & A, and cover basic questions such as "What is sustainability?", "What are we doing to promote it?" and "What can I do?"... If you enjoy talking to people about sustainability and want to get involved, contact David at deardley@ufl.edu.
Renewable Energy Fee
The referendum proposed a 50 cent per credit hour increase to tuition to fund renewable energy and efficiency on campus. The renewable energy non-binding referendum passed with 78% of voting students in the spring 2007 student government election.
On Campus Sustainability Day, students and faculty participated in a Renewable Energy Forum to discuss aspects of the plan, and to show further support of the fee.
The process is ongoing. Contact Kelly Moosbrugger at kelmoose@gmail.com for more information.
