On October 22, 1989, a group of women gathered at the Chicano Native American Cultural Center to form an organization of Latina/Hispanic women at the University of Iowa. Later these women transcended the barriers of traditional sororities by creating a sorority for women of all cultural backgrounds.
After much work and dedication, The Panhellenic Council at the University of Iowa recognized Sigma Lambda Gamma as a sorority on April 9, 1990 and thus began the legacy of Sigma Lambda Gamma.
Today, Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority is the largest Historically Latina, Multicultural Sorority in the United States with chapters expanding from New York to Texas, Florida to California. We are an academic, cultural, service and social organization, dedicated to promoting the empowerement of women in higher education. Our primary goal is to promote our evolving and diverse cultures by sharing it with others through our five principles.
As of August 2003, our sorority has 65 chapters, 14 colonies and 9 alumni associations through the state. |
