The Preprofessional Service Organization is exactly what it sounds like. It's an organization for pre-health students to get hands-on service experience in their prospective field. Even if you're just thinking about being a preprofessional student, PSO is a great way for you to explore the medical, dental, and all other health areas to get a better understanding of what being a professional in those areas entails.

You probably are wondering how membership in PSO works. Applications are accepted at the beginning of each semester, and an interview process follows. Upon acceptance as a PSO member, there are five requirements that you must fulfill to remain in good standing each semester: attend general meetings, pay dues, complete volunteer endeavors, fulfill service credits, and fulfill social credits.

First of all, there are three general meetings per semester. The meetings are a time for members to learn about volunteer opportunities, to receive important information from the board members, and to express concerns and questions. There usually is a guest speaker at each meeting who talks about his/her profession (med, dent, health) and how he/she got there.

Second, dues are $25 per semester. You will have the option of purchasing a PSO polo for $20 which can be worn while volunteering.

Third, as a PSO member you will be required to volunteer for a total of thirty hours per semester. Volunteer opportunities will be presented to you, but it is your responsibility to find a position that suits you.

Fourth, each semester our social, service and philanthropy directors will present you with various service opportunities in order for you to get involved in the community. In the past we have done things like cooking for Ronald McDonald House and St. Francis House, donating blood, walking for March of Dimes, volunteering for the Special Olympics, and volunteering for Florida's Diabetes Camp. As a member, you are required to participate in 2 service, 2 social and 1 philanthropy opportunity each semester. There are plenty of events each semester, so you should be able to find some that will fit your schedule.

Fifth, fulfilling the social credit is very similar to the service requirement. Each semester our social and service directors plan a variety of socials in order for the members to get to know one another and receive advice about classes and applying to professional schools. In the past we have gone paintballing, Lake Waulburg, the Ale House, Chilis, Fridays, Gator Dockside, and much more. As a member, you are required to fulfill 3 social credits. This is a great opportunity for you to meet the people you will be working beside in your respective field in 10 years.

If you have specific questions, please stop by the office or e-mail one of the officers.
