Pi Sigma Alpha is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) and is designated as a "Specialized, Upper-Division" honors society by ACHS.
Pi Sigma Alpha was founded in 1920 at the University of Texas for the purpose of bringing together students and faculty interested in the study of government and politics. Pi Sigma Alpha can now be found in every state of the U.S. and numbers over 658 chapters in total (634 currently active). Pi Sigma Alpha is the third largest (in size) member of ACHS; an organization linking Pi Sigma Alpha to its 66 sister academic honor societies.
According to Pi Sigma Alpha's Articles of Incorporation some of the purposes of the honors society are:
to promote worthwhile curricular and extracurricular activities related to political science;
to stimulate scholarship and intelligent interest in political science;
to organize and conduct national and international seminars, conferences, research, discussion groups, study groups, and publications in the area of political science;
to engage in all such activities and to take such other measures as may be necessary or appropriate to further the foregoing purposes.
