Welcome!
Phi Sigma Rho is a national social sorority for women in engineering and engineering technology. Our sisterhood is made up of women who are studying an area of engineering, but also actively take part in campus activities within the social Greek system.

We serve to foster friendships between females in a predominately male field. Phi Rho sisters understand the rigorous demands of being an engineering major; everyone is dedicated to helping each other through the tougher times of our academic careers. We have study groups, intramural sports teams, service projects, fundraisers, and social functions.

The members of our chapter believe that a good balance between academic and social life is essential to a successful college career. In addition to socials, the sisters of Phi Sigma Rho are involved in community service projects and philanthropies such as Relay for Life and the Girl Scouts of America.
The objectives of the sorority are:
  • To foster and provide the broadening experience of sorority living with its social and moral challenges and responsibilities for the individual and the chapter.
  • To develop the highest standard of personal integrity and character.
  • To promote academic excellence and support personal achievement, while providing a social balance.
  • To aid the individual in the transition from academic to the professional community.
  • To maintain sorority involvement with the alma mater and the community through responsible participation.
  • To maintain the bond of sisterhood with alumnae members through communication, consultation, and participation in Sorority functions.

How the Sorority was born
Phi Sigma Rho was founded in 1984 at Purdue University by two young women who desired to be part of the social Greek system, but didn't have the time for formal rush due with their challengening class schedules. They questioned, "Why are there fraternities specifically for engineering majors, but no sororities for engineers?"

The idea for creating a social sorority that could partner a rigorous engineering curriculum was born. A short time later, on September 24, 1984, the first chapter of Phi Sigma Rho was created with 10 charter members.

Since our founding, Phi Sigma Rho has become an inspiration to many women every year. There are currently seventeen chapters and four colonies of Phi Sigma Rho and we have alumnae located throughout the nation and around the world. Although the distance between Sisters may sometimes be far, the common bond of Sisterhood will always carry on!

Local History
The University of Florida Chapter was founded by Sarah Fisk, who along with her two best friends Katrina Roberts and Jessica Orr decided to start a sorority for Engineering women. Sarah woke up from a dream one morning and immediately called her friends. She told them she had dreamt that they started an Engineering Sorority.

Since she had wanted to rush a social sorority, but did not have the time due to her busy class schedule and curriculum, she decided do as in her dream, and start a sorority of her own. She searched online for different engineering sororities and finally came upon Phi Sigma Rho. Immediately she knew that this was the sorority she had been looking for.

In the Spring of 2003, Sarah began gathering girls from the Engineering department to start a chapter of Phi Sigma Rho at the University of Florida. By Fall 2003, the Heroines of Technology Association was up and running, being recognized by UF and with a member base of about 15 girls. By Spring 2004, HTA was recognized by Phi Sigma Rho and on January 17th 2004, the Alpha class was Inducted! Eighteen girls were part of this class:

Amber Bonilla, Lisa Buenostro, Ruth Burney, Sarah Fisk, Sarah Gelatioto, Lina Gendlina, Laura Gonzalez, Lindsey Hartsfield, Catherine Hurlock, Kerri Marsh, Lauren Nalepa, Elizabeth Ocipka, Karolina Ocipka, Jessica Orr, Katrina Roberts, Chelsea Scheid, Erin Trowbridge, and Anne Wise.

On August 25, 2004 Phi Sigma Rho was recognized by the University of Florida. The chapter officially became the Tau Chapter of Phi Sigma Rho on November 20, 2005. Each year we continue to grow and become more involved in both the College of Engineering and the University.
