PGL Research Program

Cross Cultural Communications

Translation services are a natural outgrowth of the PGL alliance. Not only does PGL require all of its content development to be translated into Spanish, Portuguese, and English, it also has determined a need for translation services from corporations and government agencies, the health care system, and the legal system. Elizabeth Lowe, the PGL Director has established a Translation Studies Certificate Program through the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida. The 15-credit graduate program is designed to train linguists in translation theory and practice. The program features courses in computer-assisted translation methodologies, which cover the technical issues in delivering web content in multiple languages. These issues include text formatting differences as well as differences in local and regional language usage. PGL will be involved in research projects associated with the Translation Program that specifically relate to cross-cultural language issues in e-learning. This research will be part of the Sciences of Learning team agenda. PGL will also participate in the development of online courses for the Program.
