A Model to Assess Population Dynamics of Gulf of Mexico
Sturgeon in the Suwannee River, Florida

Given concerns regarding Gulf of Mexico sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus de sotoi population survival, there is a need to assess population viability using all available data.  The Suwannee River contains the most abundant and often studied population of Gulf of Mexico sturgeon. Existing data (published and unpublished) for this population includes population estimates, adult and juvenile growth rates, total length-fecundity relationships, female size-at-maturity, egg-hatching periodicity, early-life history, and adult mortality rates.  However, despite substantial data regarding this population, long-term status of wild Gulf of Mexico sturgeon in the Suwannee River remains unknown.  This project will compile existing data for Gulf of Mexico sturgeon in the Suwannee River and develop a computer model to emulate long-term population trends.
