Seminar in Mass Communication Teaching (MMC 6930)
in the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida
Being an effective teacher takes more than knowing the subject material and finding a good textbook. Good teaching requires skills in course design, structuring in-class activities and out-of-class assignments, developing tests, utilizing new technology, being aware of diversity in the classroom, and much more.
Certainly we all learn about what works and doesn't work through trial and error as we teach. However, quite a bit of research is available about effective teaching that can help us be more reflective about our teaching and provide us with guidelines and educational frameworks to follow.
Seminar in Mass Communication Teaching is designed to help graduate students be more effective in their teaching -- as teaching assistants and as college and university faculty members. The course is taught by Dr. Julie E. Dodd .
Students in the course select an aspect of mass communication teaching to research and then teach to the class. Class presentations are videotaped and critiqued by class members.
Through CyberSlate, the class members are sharing some of what
they've learned about teaching and some resources for improving teaching.
We hope this information will help you in your teaching.
