Want to develop materials for an online teaching portfolio?
This course is designed to help both
beginning and experienced teachers be more effective instructors
and more effective in entering the university/college job market.
Major assignments include:
• Course syllabus
Develop a syllabus for a one-semester undergraduate communication
course.
• Class presentation
Teach class, prepare a written lesson plan, complete a self-evaluation.
Your presentation will be videotaped.
• Application package for university teaching position
Develop an application for a university teaching position, including a cover letter for the job, your vitae and teaching philosophy.
Ongoing discussions include:
• Classroom teaching strategies
– student assessment, test construction, group projects, discipline
issues, diversity in the classroom, developing instructional materials,
and more.
• Issues in higher education that
affect teaching and learning – university finances, legislative initiatives,
university organization and governance, new technology, accrediting
standards, and K-12 issues like standardized testing and No Child
Left Behind.
