Required Materials for MMC 2100 for Fall 2010
Required: Associated Press 2010 Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law. Edited by Darrell Christian, Sally Jacobsen and David Minthorn.
The bookstores often place these books in the section for JOU 3101. I
'd recommend the spiral-bound version. A few AP style rules have changed in this newest edition, so I'd advise you to have the 2010 edition.
Required: Kessler, Lauren, and Duncan McDonald (2008). When Words Collide. 7th ed. Belmont, Calif.: Thomson-Wadsworth.
Required: Rich, Carole (2010). Writing and Reporting News: A Coaching Method. 6th ed. Belmont, Calif.: Thomson-Wadsworth.
Please purchase this edition and not the 5th edition, as some significant changes have been made in this newer edition. If you have a previous edition, you will not be as prepared for quizzes and exams.
You do NOT need to purchase the student workbooks that accompany When Words Collide and Writing and Reporting News. We are using the same textbooks and CD-ROM as fall semester.
Required: Flash drive that can be used for bringing to lab homework assignments -- drafts of articles and digital photos. Be sure that you have an up-to-date virus checking program on your personal computer and scan the flash drive before bringing it to lab.
Recommended materials
Digital audio recorder - During the semester you'll be conducting several interviews as part of writing assignments. The decision of whether or not to record interviews is yours. If you are going to purchase a recorder, I'd suggest getting a digital one so you could more easily put sound files on the Web. Purchase a recorder with a USB port for exporting files to your computer desktop. If you have an iPod, you could purchase a microphone for about $50. Some smart phones, including the iPhone, includes a microphone that would be adequate for interviews.
Camera - For several assignments during the semester, you will need to take your own photos. You may either take digital photos or you can take take film photos and then scan the print or have the photos burned on a CD. You don't have to have your own camera but must have access to a camera for the assignments.
