René
Castillo will share his experiences and provide inspiration for students, as
well as show his films to the audience. His claymation short films including
“Sin Sostén (No Support)” and “Hasta los Huesos (Down to the Bone)” have won
many international awards for excellence in film. Castillo is eager to share
his experience as a self-taught animator struggling in the (practically not
existing) animation industry in Mexico and succeeding to make himself known in
the world of animation. This event will be
beneficial for students and faculty interested in the arts, animation and film
to discover new ways of creative expression. Castillo’s films are an expression
of Mexican cultural beliefs and practices.

In a hostile city, an insignificant man decides to take his own
life. He is then rescued and seduced by
the superfluous enchantments of the advertising world.

Hasta Los Huesos / Down To The Bone

Synopsis
A man awakens in his coffin, the music begins and
the skeletons begin to dance. The main character
discovers that despite minor inconveniences, being dead is not so bad. This
film features Mexican cultural beliefs about death and the afterlife.

René Castillo
René Castillo was born in Mexico City,
Mexico in 1969 and studied Communications at the Western Technological and
Superior Studies Institute (ITESO) in Guadalajara. In 1992, he discovered animation during a five-day course given
by the Chilean animator Vivienne Barry.
Since Mexico does not have any schools specialized in animation, he
became a self-taught animator by experimenting with different techniques. In 1998, he co-wrote and co-directed a 35 mm
short animated film called “No Support”.
This film was an Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival in 1998
and obtained many national and international awards. In mid 1998, he began to produce the short film “Down to the
Bone”, as writer, director, co-animator and co-producer. This short film was completed in 2001 and
premiered at the Annecy Festival in France with great success. Since then, this short film has been invited
to participate in various festivals, winning a large number of awards and
prizes.
In 2002, he was President of the Jury,
student division in the International Animation Festival in Annecy, the Mexican
Film Festival in Guadalajara, and the Short Film International Festival.
Since 1996 he has offered animation
workshops and produced animated commercials for television. At the present time he is working on his
next short film.
