their real stories: “Frida, Naturaleza
Viva”, by Paul Leduc (México,1984) at 7:00 pm. This is the first non
documentary film based on Frida’s life, made by the filmmaker Paul Leduc,
personal friend of Frida 18 years before the Hollywood version with Salma
Hayek. “Yo la peor
de todas (I, the worst of all)”, by Maria Luisa Bemberg (Argentina, 1995)

Trampas de la Fé by Octavio Paz, this is a personal tale of Sor Juana Inés

When:
Friday November 21,
Four
stories of deep, universal humanity are told in David Riker's auspicious debut
feature. The stories were developed in acting workshops with Spanish-speaking
immigrants and based on their impressions of building a new life in New York
City. Shot in black and white, the film has an authenticity that few films
match. "...(an) astonishing debut...has an air of tragic beauty to it that
hasn't been evoked in an American film for quite some time" (Luke Y.
Thompson, New Times Los Angeles). "It gives faces to the faceless
and is not easily forgotten" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). In
Spanish and English with English subtitles..

FIESTA DE FIN DE SEMESTRE
(There was no time to translate this part… sorry!)
Gator-1 ID’s.

HARVESTING DREAMS: AN ART EXHIBITION
Friends of the Music Room at the University
Auditorium
Monday March 3rd from 5:00 pm to
A
Celebration of Mexican Farmworking Women in Florida, is an art exhibition of
the novella: Un Camino Poblado de Sueños
[A Road Filled with Dreams]. It will be presented at the University of Florida
in celebration of Women’s History Month. This unique15 panel exhibit on cloth
portrays, through photographic and textual interpretation, the major obstacles
facing Mexican farm worker women as their transition to life en el Norte. This event celebrates Pizcando Sueños [Harvesting Dreams], the
bi-national and cultural studies project of the Rural Women's Health Project
[RWHP] of Gainesville. The RWHP is a non-profit organization, which develops
health, educational and informational materials in conjunction with farm worker
communities. This project was funded by Fideicomiso, a joint cultural
collaboration of the Rockefeller Foundation and Bancomer of Mexico. The exhibit
and its companion photo novel reflect stories collected from 20 Mexican Farm
working women in Florida. The Pizcando
Sueños exhibit is returning from a tour in two states in Mexico and a
three-month exhibit at the Crealdé School of Art in Winter Park. This reception
will also include the participation of organizations and individuals that work
with farm worker women and the issues that their families face. ”This
celebration is a phenomenal opportunity for everyone to learn and understand Mexican
women’s migration. It also offers an
opportunity to explore their transition into the farm worker lifestyle” -states
Fabiola del Castillo, Mexican Anthropologist and Pizcando Sueños collaborator.
The event is sponsored by the Center for Women’s Studies and Gender Research,
La Casita and Mexicans in Gainesville. For more information contact the Rural
Women’s Health Project at 372-1095.
