What is LTA?

Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc., was born at Kean College (now Kean University) in Union, New Jersey in December 1975. Thanks to tremendous strides made by our Founding Mothers, the organization grew to become the first Latina-based sorority in the nation. Lambda Theta Alpha has been paving the way ever since. The organization has grown to include more than 100 chapters nationwide and in Puerto Rico and continues to grow each day.

Lambda Theta Alpha is a philanthropic academic-based sorority dedicated to scholarly excellence, empowerment of Latinas and the universal woman, cultural and political awareness, and community activism. Our principles are Unity, Love and Respect. The sorority was established as a network and support system for women of all ethnicities in higher education. We are an organization that is “Latin by Tradition, Not By Definition.”

Mission: The purpose of Lambda Theta Alpha shall be to provide a sisterhood based on Unity, Love & Respect. To develop strong Leaders who will then provide and practice political, social and cultural activities. To promote Latino Unity through charitable and educational programs. To maintain a high standard of learning and serve as a voice for all Latino students.

Since its establishment in the Spring of 1996, Chi Chapter has made great strides at the University of Florida. Chi Chapter became the first chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha to be established in the State of Florida and the first Latin sorority on the UF campus. Chi Chapter also takes much pride in being one of four founding member organizations of the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) at UF.

Furthermore, Chi Chapter has played an active role in expansion of the sorority nationwide, including the sorority’s first alumnae chapter Lambda Alpha. FS Jessica Serrano also founded Lambda Eta Alumnae Chapter in New York. Chi Chapter alumnae have gone on to pursue professional careers and many remain active through an Alumnae chapter or by serving on Area Boards, the National Board of Directors, numerous National committees or the Alumnae Association Board.
