Configuring LPR for use with CIRCA Charged Network Printing
This document describes how to configure a specific implementation of an
LPR client for use with Windows '95 computers. The information contained
here is generic information that can be used for any LPR client, although
the details of configuration vary from client to client.
CIRCA has arranged with the University of Texas to use their LPR client
for Windows '95, called ACITS LPR for Windows '95.
What is LPR?
LPR is a a protocol for printing documents over TCP/IP (the internet). It
allows you to print to a remote printer, in this case, it allows access to
CIRCA Charged Network Printing services in the CIRCA public labs. This can
be done from home, or from a laptop connected to CIRCA's lab (or any
other campus lab/network).
Specific details:
To install the software, obtain the executable INSTLPR.EXE.
Once obtained, double-click on it. Follow the prompts.
To configure a printer:
- Open Printer Control panel.
- Select Add Printer.
- Select Next.
- For now, because the port hasn't been created, select Local Printer.
- Select the type of printer. (See table below).
- Port should default to LPT1:. Hit Next.
- Give the printer a descriptive name, such as CSE B&W Laser
- Do not print a test page.
- Hit Finish.
Now that the printer has been configured, the network port needs to be
set up.
- Right-Click on the printer you just created, and select Properties.
- Select the Details tab.
- Select Add Port
- Select type Other, then ACITS LPR Remote Printing.
- Press OK.
- For Host Name, enter whale.circa.ufl.edu
- For Printer/Queue Name, choose from the table below.
- Press OK.
- Select Spool Settings.
- Choose Start printer after last page is spooled.
- Choose Disable bi-directional support for this printer
- Hit OK twice.
Now to use this printer, select the appropriate printer in the print dialog,
and print normally. The job will be spooled to the CIRCA public lab you
chose. Warning: Currently, jobs are held for 3 hours
before being purged. If you do not release your job within that time, it
will be deleted automatically.
