Computer:
University of Florida policy requires each student to have access
to a computer. All Distance Education students must have access
not only to a computer and the World Wide Web, but personal E-mail
is mandatory. All students enrolled in IFAS distance education courses
must have an E-mail account.
Required
Software and Hardware:
Your computer hardware must meet the IFAS
Computer Requirement and should be configured for multimedia
and internet connectivity.
WebCT
and Browsers.
WebCT only works with some browsers. Part of this is a WebCT issue,
and part of the problem is browser-related. At present, the supported
browsers are Netscape Navigator 7+ and Internet Explorer 6.0.26+;
but these are getting difficult to find and download. So until the
browsers and WebCT learn to play well together, here are links to
the supported browsers:
In addition to the browser, we will be using a couple of free "plug-in's"
for the course. These "plug-ins" are installed on your
computer, and support multimedia on the web (audio, video, animation,
etc). The plug-ins required for this course are: RealPlayer
10 and the Adobe
Acrobat Reader. Directions on how to download and install these
free programs are available at the product websites - or in the
Gator
Guide to WebCT.
Additional Software: Computer software must consist of a word processing
program, either Microsoft’s Word or Corel’s Office Suite (Suite
97 or newer). The office or suite programs are recommended because
they allow for different instructional media such as word processing,
presentation, and spreadsheets. All files sent to the instructor
must be IBM compatible and saved as either: (1) Word or Word Perfect,
(2) Rich Text or (3) PDF documents.
GatorLink:
As a student you may access GatorLink at http://www.gatorlink.ufl.edu
and receive 60 hours of free internet service per month. Graduate
students may additional dialup hours (90 hrs). Your Gatorlink account
also entitles you web space. Check out the range of services available
through GatorLink (http://help.gatorlink.ufl.edu/)
ISIS Integrated Student Information System:
ISIS permits access to your academic and financial records (http://www.isis.ufl.edu).
Security requires that you provide a Gatorlink ID and password for
access. If you have not used ISIS previously, you may enter your
4-digit birthday (i.e., 0320 for March 20) as a temporary number
and then select a permanent PIN.
TeleGator (352) 37-GATOR (374-2867):
This telephone system provides rapid, easy access to basic services
used frequently by students. Access TeleGator from any touch-tone
phone. It allows students to check items such as fee information,
holds, schedules, grades, grade point averages, etc.
Gator-1 Card:
A Gator-1 card is needed for the use of on-campus libraries, purchasing
tickets to sports games and other on campus events. For more information
on how to obtain a Gator-One Card, check http://www.bsd.ufl.edu/idcard/GATOR1C.htm
or call Mary Patton at (352) 392-8343.
Submitting Attachments:
We will use the built in Email feature in WebCT to send Email and
attachments. All assignments will be turned in via attachment, and
should be formatted in one of the software programs described above.
(Remember: all attachments must be IBM formatted. If you have a
Macintosh, please contact us ASAP and we will provide an alternate
method.) Directions on how to attach a file to an Email message
are provided in the Gator
Guide. Please remember to post all technical questions to the
Bulletin Board under "Help."
