We're planning on displaying a sort of mock dorm, mock classroom and mock bathroom on Plaza of the Americas, Turlington, and the North Lawn to represent that the only true safe place for transgender people is outside. Our goals are to bring awareness, and educate everyone on the usually obscure issue of transgender rights. We want to show that something needs to be done.

GatorGSA.org's New Site and Structure

The Gator Gay-Straight Alliance has a new website operating with Drupal 4.6.0 from www.drupal.org. We hope that this new system will enable us to better manage the content we provide, as well as provide a better end-user experience through customization and ease-of-use. We think you'll really like the new system. To the left is a screenshot of our new site. If you have any, any problems at all, we'd love to hear from you. Transgender Remembrance Day Fall 2004

On November 19th and November 20th, 2004, the Gator Gay-Straight Alliance held an event to remember Transgendered individuals who have died or been killed. After a few meetings, we came up with the idea of putting out body outlines, white with a black outline, and each with a story of one transgendered person's death. Since the official Transgender Remembrance Day was Saturday, November 20th, we tabled the Thursday and Friday before that, in the hopes of both advocating for and remembering those who have been killed. We decided to make ten outlines and put them at our tabling locations. We started tabling in Turlington and then brought some of our outlines to other tabling locations such as the Reitz Union Colonnade. We also flyered during the day those two days. We had many people come up to our table to express their support for the cause. We also saw people step, stand, drive, and bike over the outlines as well. In future events of this kind, we hope to find even more effective ways to get involved in Transgender Remembrance Day. See our Transgender Remembrance Day page for more, including pictures.

National Coming Out Week, Fall 2004

The week of October 11th is National Coming Out Week, and Saturday October 11 is National Coming Out Day. Since 1987 the National Coming Out Project has been increasing the visibility of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. This year the Gator Gay-Straight Alliance added visibility of another kind.

GatorGSA's events this year included tabling, I Came Out As... stickers, and a Speak Out. Our tabling is intended to let people know about what the day called "National Coming Out Day" is about. We hope stickers where people can write what they came out as (anything they want to come out as, mechanic, cat person, etc!) will help normalize the idea of coming out, and we also think that stickers will be a fun way to get everyone, not just the GLBTQ community, involved.
