National Public Radio Internship through AAJA (Asian American Journalists Association) -- National Public Radio (NPR) and the AAJA offers an opportunity for an AAJA student to become an intern at NPR in Washington, D.C. for the summer. The student chosen as an AAJA intern for NPR in Washington D.C., will also be a part of the AAJA Student Radio Project, The Beat, at our annual national convention. The internship runs from late May to the first week of August. The student receives a stipend for the 10 weeks. NPR assists in securing housing in the D.C. area. The intern is responsible for his/her own travel to and from D.C.

Siani Lee Broadcast Internship for Television through AAJA -- The Siani Lee Broadcast Internship is held during the summer at CBS affiliate KYW-TV, in Philadelphia. The internship was created by AAJA in honor of the late Siani Lee, the popular Philadelphia television news anchor who died in a car accident on October 28, 2001. Lee is considered the first Asian Pacific American anchor in Philadelphia. Applicants must have a serious interest in pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. Interns must be 18 years of age and currently enrolled in a post secondary program that gives academic credit for internships. Students must be in satisfactory academic standing with a minimum overall grade point average of 2.7 (C+) and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (B) in major courses. Qualified AAJA members are preferred. AAJA awards a stipend of $2,500 to help defray internship costs of travel and lodging.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- White House Internship -- Great for anyone aspiring to become a political journalist and a great opportunity to network with the very people that you will cover. In addition to normal office duties, interns attend weekly lectures, volunteer at special events, participate in tours, and contribute to a community service project in the Washington, D.C. area. White House Internships are unpaid positions and participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation and housing. Approximately 100 interns are chosen each spring, summer, and fall to participate in this highly competitive program. Deadline is usually in early March.

AWARDS

The Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award honors the outstanding reporting of the lives and strife of disadvantaged people throughout the world. Known as the "Poor People's Pulitzers" within the press arena, these award recipients have brought to light issues spanning from child abuse and juvenile crime to discriminatory banking practices and prejudice against AIDS victims. Deadline is in February.

National Association of Hispanic Journalists - Journalism Award -- This contest is open to NAHJ members who can demonstrate journalistic excellence in their selected medium or non-members who bring awareness to and report on the Latino community. The Guillermo Mart?nez-M?rquez Award for Latin American Reporting award offers a cash prize for excellence in reporting from Latin America or outstanding reports about Latin America that create awareness about the region. Open in categories of: Television - Feature, Documentary, Investigative and Breaking News; Radio - Reporting; Videography - General News, Feature. Deadline is in March.

Hearst Journalism Awards - Broadcast News Competition II -- Entrant must be an undergraduate journalism major currently enrolled in one of the colleges or universities that are accredited by Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC).
- The student must be actively involved in campus media and must have published articles, photographs or produced newscasts that can be submitted in our monthly contests.
- Contact the chair of your journalism department if you are interested in participating in competitions. Entry forms and information about monthly contests are available only through the journalism department offices of the participating schools. Please note that the department selects the students who are eligible to enter our competitions.
- Graduate students are not eligible to enter the program.
Deadline is in February.

SCHOLARSHIPS

University of Florida: Knight Division -- To be eligible for scholarships and assistantships, students must be enrolled full-time at the University of Florida (12 semester hours) at the time the award becomes effective. Some awards are restricted to students with demonstrated financial need. The minimum grade point average (GPA) to be considered for most awards is a 2.8, unless otherwise specified.
Deadline is in February.

National Association of Black Journalists -- Annually, NABJ awards deserving students interested in pursuing a career in journalism awards of more than $30,000 in NABJ scholarships. Each scholarship is worth up to $5,000. Scholarships are open to any foreign or American born students, currently attending an accredited four-year college/university in the U.S. or those who are candidates for graduate school.
Deadline is in April.

National Association of Hispanic Journalists -- The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) offers several scholarships through our Ruben Salazar Scholarship Fund program. These scholarships are designed to encourage and assist Latino students pursue careers in journalism. Hispanics remain woefully underrepresented in mainstream U.S. newsrooms. One of NAHJ?s goals is to help more qualified Hispanic students to move from the classroom to the newsroom. NAHJ offers scholarships to college undergraduates and graduate students pursuing careers as print, photo, broadcast or online journalism.

South Asian Journalists Association -- Each year SAJA awards a $1,000 scholarship to a college student who meets the qualifications listed on the website.

AAJA Scholarships:

AAJA/Cox Foundation Scholarship
Awards of up to $2,500 to students pursuing careers in print, broadcast or photo journalism.

AAJA/S.I. Newhouse Foundation Scholarships
Awards of up to $5,000 each to college students pursuing careers in newspaper print journalism. While the scholarship is open to all students, AAJA especially encourages applicants from historically underrepresented Asian Pacific American groups, including Vietnamese, Cambodians, Hmong and other Southeast Asians, South Asians and Pacific Islanders. S.I. Newhouse scholarship winners will be eligible for summer internships with a Newhouse publication.

Minoru Yasui Memorial Scholarship
$2,000 to a promising Asian American male broadcaster. A civil rights advocate and attorney, Minoru Yasui was one of three Nisei who challenged the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

Mary Moy Quan Ing Memorial Scholarship
$2,000 to a graduating high school senior who is enrolling in college and pursuing a journalism career.

AAJA-CNN 25 Scholar Program
In commemoration of CNN's 25th anniversary in 2005 and AAJA's 25th anniversary in 2006, this program will award the largest scholarships in AAJA history. Over the next three years from 2006-2008, a total of 12 graduating high school students will be given four-year scholarships of $25,000 each toward broadcast and online college majors.

Vincent Chin Memorial Scholarship
Since his death in 1982, Vincent Chin has become one of the icons for Asian American civil rights and intolerance of hate crimes. Through this new scholarship, AAJA will award $5,000 a journalism student committed to keeping Vincent Chin's memory alive.

AAJA Local Competitions
Many AAJA chapters offer local scholarships or internship competitions. Students residing near or attending school in an area served by an AAJA chapter may be eligible to apply. Call the Asian American Journalists Association's national office for information on availability of local scholarships.
