History of NBS

The National Broadcasting Society - Alpha Epsilon Rho was formed on the campus of Stephens College in Missouri in 1943. It was originally called Alpha Epsilon Rho in honor of the Association for Education in Radio (AER) which the organization met in convention with in Columbus, Ohio for many years. The National Broadcasting Society has as its purpose to enhance the development of college and university students involved in broadcasting, cable, telecommunications and other electronic media by:

1. Promoting excellence.
2. Providing opportunities for ethical and responsible leadership.
3. Providing exposure to the electronic media industries.
4. Assisting in career preparation.
5. Providing opportunities for and encouraging the development of members through advanced media education programs and community service at chapter, district, regional and national levels.

Alpha Epsilon Rho is the honor society within the National Broadcasting Society. Its membership is restricted to the "best of the best" found within the membership ranks of NBS.
