The Two Most Common Forms of Spina Bifida:

  • Myelomeningocele is the most common type of spina bifida. It is characterized by protrusion of the spinal cord components (including nerves) outside the body and is usually accompanied by the more severe complications associated with spina bifida (i.e., paralysis, brain defects, hydrocephalus, reduced bladder and bowel control).
