A Message from Folate

Hi, my name is Folate. I'm the B vitamin that helps make healthy babies. I have been helping babies for years. I helped you when you were smaller than a pea! Ever since scientists found my secret talents, they've been telling people all about me. People are finding a whole new reason for eating their spinach! And Popeye thought it would just give him strength to knock down a wall!
OK, kids, if you don't like spinach, you can find me in many foods you may like better, like strawberries and orange juice.
Breakfast cereals and breads have folic acid, the man made form of folate, added to them.
Labs all over the world are studying my secret talents. Scientists spend hours and hours a day trying to figure out how I help babies, kids, and adults. So, today I'll share a bit about my secrets with you!

You see, I help make a special compound called DNA. DNA is needed for making new cells. Of course, this is really important for a baby, because babies grow very quickly. They need more cells to grow. It is also important for you, your parents, and your grandparents!

People of ALL ages make new cells every day, and I can help them make healthy cells.

Scientists are asking women who can have a baby to make sure they get folic acid every day, so I can help them make healthy new cells for their babies. Healthy cells mean healthy babies!

Remember, folate is important for every person, including YOU, since YOU need new cells every day! Taking a vitamin and eating foods with folate can help you have a healthy heart and may also help prevent cancer.
