Miller’s Ten Tips for Engineering Career Success

by Robert H. Miller, P.E.

.You must enjoy your work - The best way to reach your capacity and achieve success is to enjoy what you’re doing. If it isn’t fun to you, choose something that is.

.Plan your future - Set goals and take control of your career. Decide what you want for your future and outline a path. If you don’t know where you want to go, you’ll never know if you are heading in the "right" direction.

.Keep your promises - Whenever you promise something, no matter how seemingly insignificant it may be to you, keep your word. The business world needs more people with integrity.

.Appreciate those working around you - Good relations with co-workers and subordinates is just as essential to career success as keeping your boss happy. Show appreciation for all they do and they’ll do even more for you.

.Hone your communication skills - The ability to clearly and effectively write, speak and listen is as important as technical competence. Constantly work to improve your communication skills.

.Give to your community and profession - As a professional, you have a responsibility to invest your time and energies to benefit the world around you. Give some of yourself to a good cause without expecting anything in return - the benefits will come automatically.

.Never stop learning - Your education is only beginning after college. Turn every experience, by retrospect, into a lesson. Take courses and attend seminars at every opportunity to broaden your horizons.

.Seek out challenges and opportunities - Career success is for the bold, not the timid. Volunteer to accept new or difficult assignments - then do the best you can. Don’t wait for opportunity to find you - go search for it.

.Work for a good company - You’ll advance faster and farther working for a company wih an excellent reputation and one that appreciates you and treats you well. You’ll also get lots more job satisfaction and rewards.

.Never burn your bridges - Treat everyone you come in contact with as though they control your reputation - because they do. When they tell others about dealing with you, what will they say? Remember - "What goes around, comes around."
