Ripping Rock

Bulldozing & rock ripping are complementary capabilities (see Fig 5-1, pg 97, textbook)

Ripping is less expensive than drilling & blasting

The velocity of sound in rock is an indication of the rock’s rippability.

~ low velocity - rippable ( < 6,000 - 8,000 fps {feet per second})

~ high velocity - not rippable ( > 8,000 or 9,000 fps )

~ see Fig 5-25, pg 135 & Fig. 5-24, pg 134 of textbook

If marginal velocities are obtained, then field tests to attempt rock ripping may be desirable.

Ripper characteristics:

~ tractor mounted

~ towed

~ single shank or multiple shanks

~ linkage radial (hinge) or parallel type

~ depth or ripping

~ angle or point

Alternate excavation techniques for rock/soil:

~ ripping and scraper loading & hauling

~ drilling, blasting, scraper loading & hauling

~ drilling, blasting, dozing, shovel loading & truck hauling
