CPM Network (AON)

Precedence (Activity-On-Node) Network Notation

~Proceed with project planning.

~Let a box represent each activity with a duration.

~Activity dependency is shown by a line between boxes.

~Each project has single start and Finish activities. These may be of zero duration.

~Each network path is continuous.

~Activities are assigned unique numbers.

~Line length is meaningless and arrow heads are optional.

~Subnetworks can combine to make a master network.

~There are no dummy activities with the precedence diagram.

~Revisions are easily made, node positioning is not critical and activity numbers need not change.

Precedence (Activity-On-Node) Network Notation -- continued

Proceed with project scheduling.

Estimate activity durations (customary work days):

~ CPM - uses a single time estimate

~ PERT - uses three time estimates (TE): minimum, most likely, maximum.

Perform network calculation for both activity and project start and Finish times (forward and backward pass).
