How To Get Started

  • Stop by practice to see what fencing is all about. Talk to the members; let them know that you're interested in learning more. You can also contact any of the officers or captains if you have specific questions.

  • Once you decide to try it, start coming to beginner practices in the Florida Gym. (Check the Practice page for times.) These practices are geared towards building a foundation for the sport. Bring your Gator1 and wear sneakers and clothing you can move around in. (Boots and jeans are not good ideas!) All equipment is provided free of charge.

  • Before you pick up a weapon, you must complete a Sport Clubs waiver. All sport clubs are required to have their members fill out the form before participation.

  • After you get a feel for fencing, you may choose to become an active member of the club. We have a variety of memberships for both competitive and recreational fencers. Please visit the General section of this Web site for details. If you are at all confused about which membership would be best for you, then please do not feel embarrassed to ask an officer.

  • If you have previous experience, talk to an officer or coach about your training and goals, but please be prepared to come to beginner practices. Should you demonstrate veteran-level skills, you will be moved to veteran fencing practice. If it is decided that you should remain in beginner practice, please do not take this as an insult. Try to understand that your fencing will only get better with a firm understanding of the basic skills only taught in beginner practices. It would be unfair to the advanced fencers for their practice time to be used to train people who do not have a firm grip on those principles.
