Fencing at the Univerity of Florida goes back decades. The competitive side of the sport became more refined when Coach Bruce Capin took over the program in the fall of 1998. Since then, the team has been increasingly competing on the NCAA, regional, and national levels (Divisions 1, 1A, II, III of the United States Fencing Association). Many members of Florida Fencing strive to be increasingly competitive in national circles of fencing. The club has designated a specific membership class to support these members and their goals. Ninety-nine percent of all fencers walk on with no prior experience. UF prides itself on taking students who wish to become competitors and turn them into athletes. Florida's record speaks for itself. If a student-athlete wants to excel in the sport of fencing, the possibilities are unlimited as long as the individual is willing to work hard.
2003 - 2004 was a good year for the Gators. UF fencers placed consistently in the top 16 at the North American Cup events and at the Temple (NCAA) Collegiate Open. Carlos de la Rosa ended Florida's medal drought by making the finals at Temple while the women's foil team (Crandall, Creel, Keathley) brought home NIWFA Championship medals for the first time ever. Leigh Schrimpf became only the second epeeist to medal individually. Crandall and Keathley also made the final in individual foil. 2004 marked the most medals in the four year that UF has participated in the NIWFA Championships.
Lady Gators also participated in the NIWFA Individual Championship held annually since 1933. Foil fencer Katie Keathley won the individual foil competition, becoming the first female in UF history to win an NIWFA title in any weapon.
The 2nd US Collegiate Club Nationals took place in April at the University of New Hampshire. The women's team lost as repeat National Champions to UMASS by one bout. The combined team finished third. Women's foil team finished second to UNH by one bout. Women's epee lost the gold medal to Texas by 5 bouts. In individual events, all three women on the foil team made the final round, as did one women's epeeist.
UF showed well at the Southeast Sectional Championship placing two women in the foil final and one in the epee final. The UF men did not place in the individual final, however three of the four mens epeeists defeated nationally-ranked opponents; those three have been competing for less than two years.
2004 - 2005 Outlook
Men
The 2004 - 2005 season looks promising for the University of Florida men. Julian Andrews is in good position to medal at the North American Cup, Southeast Sectionals and Temple (NCAA) Open. Carlos de la Rosa also looks to repeat his medal performance at Temple while medalling in the Cup events. Both mens saber and epee teams should be in the running for team and individual medals at the US Collegiate Championships to be held in April at Michigan State University.
Women
The women return veteran squads in all three weapons. There is as much talent and more depth than previous years and, 2004 - 2005 should produce medals in all major events: NIWFA, Temple (NCAA) Open, Southeast Sectionals, North American Cup, and US Collegiate Championships. Kelly Crandall and Katie Keathley are favored to become the first women to medal at the Cup events this spring. The women's foil team will have its first legitimate chance at an NIWFA title this March. It would be the first team title in any weapon for UF.
Team
UF travels to the west coast for the first time to take on Californian schools including UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Tech, and Cal State Fullerton in a dual meet in January, followed by the US Collegiate Championships in April at Michigan State. The competition will be difficult and the expectations higher, but the Gators will be working hard to ensure a successful season as they take another step toward the goal of excellence in sport.
Team and squad captains lead the competitive membership. These captains ensure the smooth running of practice and provide support for their team and squads. Captains were elected by the active membership on Wednesday, September 15, 2004.

The University of Florida Department of Athletics was considering the addition of women’s fencing as a varsity sport. We have received numerous letters of support from NCAA teams, among them Stanford, Notre Dame, Temple, UNC, and Penn State. If fencing was chosen, competition was set to begin Fall 2003. Although the decision was not in our favor, both men’s and women’s teams would like to thank all the coaches and teams who have supported our efforts whether in writing or by competition invitations.
