CoachesBruce Capin
Bruce Capin enters his sixth year at Florida since building the program in 1998. Prior to UF, Capin was head coach at New Mexico State University (1995 - 1996), and San Jose State University (1992 - 1995). Capin attended Penn State University where he earned a Liberal Arts degree in Russian Language, and competed as a member of the Penn State men’s saber squad from 1981 - 85. He was a four-year varsity letterman, North Atlantic Collegiate Champion (1985), and placed 15th at the NCAA Championships at Notre Dame in 1985. Capin was a member of the United States National Squad for 12 years (1985 - 96). He made the finals of the US Trials in January 1990, and was ranked 9th in the United States in 1991. Capin was a member of the USA team that competed in the World University Games in Zagreb, Yugoslavia (1987), and a five time US Olympic Festival athlete, winning 1 silver and 3 bronze medals. He also represented the United States in the World Cup ‘A’ events during the 1990-91 season. Capin’s coaches include Bill Shipman, the current head coach at Brandeis University, Emik Kaidanov (Penn State University), Tomas Kovacs, former member of the Hungarian National Team, and Olympic medallist, and Jakab Laszlo (Vasas Sport Club) in Budapest, Hungary.
David Goldsmith
David Goldsmith is a recent graduate of the University of Florida where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science with a minor in Business Administration. In 1996, he began fencing in high school with the club at Florida State University under Ben Jacobs. From 1998-2000 he attended the University of Georgia in Athens and was coached by David Porter. David transferred to the University of Florida in 2000, training under Bruce Capin. He was captain of the Men’s Foil Squad and, in his final year, became Men’s Team Captain. David’s top competitive finishes include a Gold Medal in the Georgia Junior Foil Championships (1998); Silver Medal 2002 North America Cup Division II Epee; Silver Medal Individual Men’s Foil 2002 National Collegiate Club Fencing Championship; and Foil Finalist 2003 South Eastern Sectionals. Upon graduation from the University of Florida David and two former teammates, Amir Rubin and Bryan da Frota, have founded an engineering firm located in Gainesville focusing on robotics and embedded systems development. David’s responsibilities with the team include training new recruits and coaching the veteran foil team.
