CoachesBruce Capin
Bruce Capin enters his sixth year at Florida since building the program in 1998. Prior to UF, Capin was head coach at New Mexico State University (1995 - 1996), and San Jose State University (1992 - 1995). Capin attended Penn State University where he earned a Liberal Arts degree in Russian Language, and competed as a member of the Penn State men’s saber squad from 1981 - 85. He was a four-year varsity letterman, North Atlantic Collegiate Champion (1985), and placed 15th at the NCAA Championships at Notre Dame in 1985. Capin was a member of the United States National Squad for 12 years (1985 - 96). He made the finals of the US Trials in January 1990, and was ranked 9th in the United States in 1991. Capin was a member of the USA team that competed in the World University Games in Zagreb, Yugoslavia (1987), and a five time US Olympic Festival athlete, winning 1 silver and 3 bronze medals. He also represented the United States in the World Cup ‘A’ events during the 1990-91 season. Capin’s coaches include Bill Shipman, the current head coach at Brandeis University, Emik Kaidanov (Penn State University), Tomas Kovacs, former member of the Hungarian National Team, and Olympic medallist, and Jakab Laszlo (Vasas Sport Club) in Budapest, Hungary. Halim Aljibury
Hal Aljibury is also a recent graduate of UF, where he earned a Masters
degree in electrical engineering (Dec 2001). Aljibury has been fencing since high
school, and has fenced for UC San Diego and the University of Florida.
Aljibury fenced foil for a year at UCSD before switching to epee, his
preferred weapon. While at UCSD, he placed third at the Western Regional
Championships (1995), and competed in the NCAA championships that year. After arriving at
Florida, he was a competitive member of the epee squad until his graduation.
His results include 1997 Div3 summer nationals (3rd) and 1998 Div1A summer
nationals (6th). He currently holds a B02 rating, and is looking to earn both his A rating and national points in
the near future.
Michael Barrett
Michael Barrett is a recent graduate of the University of Florida where he earned a degree in Linguistics in 2000. This is Barrett's first year coaching for the Florida Fencers. Barrett returns to instruct incoming fencers after fencing four years himself as one of Capin's first students. Barrett is also one of the University of Florida's two Southeast Individual Men's Saber Champions and a finalist at the 2000 Temple Collegiate Open. |
