Factors Influencing Water Applied
Container plant water needs are influenced by many factors.
- Plant species and size influence container plant water needs. Different plant species need different amounts of water to achieve the same growth, and plant water needs vary with plant size.
- Environmental factors influence container plant water
needs. Plants grown in geographic locations that are arid or that receive minimal
rain need more supplemental water applied than they would if they were grown in humid regions.
Plants grown under shade require less water than they would without shade.

In the springtime there is often low humidity and large amounts of solar radiation, which contribute to a high plant water need. Conversely, during the summer there is high humidity and clouds that reduce solar radiation, and hence, plant water need.
- Distance or space between container plants results in more water use than if plants were arranged directly adjacent to one another. Plants spaced apart have air movement around them that results in large amounts of plant water loss.
