Introduction

Optimal plant growth depends on management of inputs such as irrigation water and fertilizer to achieve the critical balance between plant needs and excess. Excess water and fertilizer are lost from the container substrate, so one must know the physical properties of the container substrate to achieve optimal water and fertilizer use by the plants. For example, each substrate can hold a specific amount of water. Water applied in excess of this amount is lost from the container.

The following information will assist you in determining the physical properties of your container substrate and provide information regarding how the substrate physical properties can be modified to achieve desirable properties.
