Physical Property Evaluation using pipe cylinder tests:
Substrate physical properties may be determined with a test that uses a pipe cylinder the same height as the substrate in its container. In other words, physical properties vary depending on the height of the substrate, not the diameter. Therefore, this procedure is preferred for containers that are large and heavy with substrate. A description of the pipe cylinder and a procedure for characterizing substrates six inches high in a container are provided as an example. Once pipe cylinders are constructed for the height of substrate to be tested, a step-by-step procedure is given for ease of use.
