Heroes

You do not choose your destiny. It chooses you; and those who knew you before fate took you by the hand cannot understand the depth of the changes inside. They cannot fathom how much you stand to lose in failure, that you are the instrument of a flawless design, and all of life may hang in the balance. The hero learns quickly who can comprehend and who merely stands in your way.

For The Record

My stupid ass cable box finished updating after The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. This was, mind you, only once I:

  1. Disconnected it from the mains
  2. Connected it to the mains
  3. Let it do the hex thing for about half an hour
  4. Disconnected it from the mains again
  5. Disconnected it from the cable
  6. Connected it to the mains
  7. Let it sit for ten minutes
  8. Connected it to the cable
  9. Let it do the hex thing for another five minutes

And before you start screaming that I shouldn't have pulled the mains while it was flashing its firmware: It's not like I wanted to disconnect the damn thing - I left the box for over twelve hours while it was stuck in a countdown (r.578, r.576, r.580, r.579, r.578, …).

My power most definitely did not fail during the update - the equipment is connected to a UPS which also backs my computers. Amazingly (or not), they've been running all day…

Failure to apply firmware updates: yet another reason why Cox sucks.

Horrible Dialog

I enjoy 24, I really do. It beats me over the head with stressful situations and suspense like no other show.

But really, what is with the horrible dialog? Examples from Monday's episode:

I've just authorized a unit-wide backslash protocol.

Someone please inform the writers that NO ONE SAYS SHIT LIKE THIS.

I have your brother's blood on my hands and for that I will never forgive myself.

Average actors + literal description of feelings = CHEESE.

Don't mind me, I'll be in the corner waiting for the next season of Spooks.

Wonderfalls DVDs

I received my Wonderfalls DVD set from Amazon only two days after the set was released - rather quickly considering I went for free shipping. I don't need Amazon Prime with this kind of service.

Wonderfalls is currently ranked eighth on Amazon's DVD top sellers list; buy the set to show Fox what a mistake they made in canceling the series!

I still recall the taste of your tears

His and Her Circumstances

Suresh recommended "His and Her Circumstances" to me recently, so I've been renting the DVDs from Netflix. I've been really enjoying it, though it was a little strange at first.

Spooks!

As I mentioned previously, Spooks is one of my favorite shows. Smart spy drama + good writing + good cast + Keeley Hawes = fun. It fills the void that the third season of Alias left.

I've been a little annoyed that the BBC doesn't update the Spooks Web site more frequently. The news section has said the same thing for months now: that Series 3 is in production and will air in the fall, and that Series 2 will also be available on DVD in the fall.

Every so often I check Amazon UK, since I bought the Series 1 DVDs there. The DVDs are finally available for preorder, with a release date of September 20.

Side rant: Unlike FOX, the BBC manages to produce entertaining shows (e.g. Spooks and Coupling) without chickening out. I don't know who decides what shows end up on FOX, but they aren't doing their job very well.

Wonderfalls

I just read through Orkut that FOX has canceled Wonderfalls (warning: Flash). The news is on Buffistas and Ain't It Cool News.

First FOX canceled Firefly, and now this? I can only hope that FOX will release the remaining episodes on DVD. Please?

Spooks

Spooks is one of my favorite TV shows. I was introduced to it by A&E's MI-5, but always preferred the BBC version because it was longer. Series 3 is apparently filming, and will be released in the fall!

Jewel Staite

I just finished watching Firefly. Jewel Staite, who I loved in a show called Fast Forward, plays the ship mechanic. w00t.
