It will probably be changed shortly, but check out the filename of the Bush image on Netscape's election page.
I decided to try Ubuntu Linux, a new Debian-based distribution, in VMware.
Ubuntu gets a lot of things right. Its default configuration targets desktop computers, with a full GNOME 2.8 desktop. It comes with Gaim for instant messaging, Evolution for email and calendars, and OpenOffice.org for working with business documents. I like the theme, the TrashApplet, and the way that the GNOME menus are organized (big improvement over GNOME 2.6). Also, it uses udev and HAL to manage hardware. (It's amazing how far Linux has come.)
In the screenshot, I'm updating Ubuntu with Synaptic. To update my entire system, I had to click like three buttons - Refresh, Mark All Upgrades, and Apply. Granted, it's not as easy as Mac OS X's Software Update or even Red Hat's up2date, but it's still pretty nice.
I still prefer Gentoo for my needs, but for people wanting to try Linux, Ubuntu is probably a good choice.
(More screenshots, from LinuxBeta.com.)
I got a new computer at work recently. It's a dual Xeon 2.40 GHz with Hyper-Threading, 1 GB of RAM, SATA, etc. It's, uh, fast. :-)
I had to delete a few backgrounds hosted on my Plaza account to upload this, but here's my first screenshot from the PowerBook.
I'm glad to get 20 MB from Plaza, but I'm over that limit with just screenshots. Maybe it's time to move my backgrounds, screenshots, etc. to my server at home. I could use Apache::Gallery or one of the many PHP gallery systems.
I finally decided to try XFce 4. I love Gnome 2 (well, with Sawfish instead of Metacity), but I was looking for something a little more lightweight. I still love Window Maker, and still use it at work, so that was definitely an option. However, I've spent a lot of time at home getting a consistent look in my applications, and Window Maker breaks that at times. So, here's a screenshot.
New background, new screenshot. I scaled it up from the original screenshot that was on Fark, so credit goes to whoever created it in the first place.
I also created some backgrounds of the Rez scene in Vanilla Sky. You'll understand if you've heard the song by Underworld.
2004.01.16 - I took these down to make space on my Plaza account.
If you happen to know where I can find the desktop background in this image, please let me know.
Slashdot has apparently started banning itself from its own RSS feeds. (See the Ask Slashdot Slashbox.)
Back up in your ass with the resurrection (Trillian works!). Also, I got Cygwin and XFree86 working!
More screenshots - Windows 2000 Professional, and now ... Windows XP Professional.
Cable modem = bandwidth. (Okay, so it's past my physical limit, but it's still cool.)
So, it's taken one week for me to spend almost $47 at Starbucks. Who's a whore? I'm a whore.
431219 minutes = 7187 hours = 300 days = 0.82 years
Screenshots!
Anyone notice a trend in my desktop picture selection? :-)
By the way, this sucks. I am forced to use Windows because of classes.
I'm using Windows XP at work - see the screenshot. So far, it's not too bad.
It can't be a good thing that Windows Update is cracked while I'm trying to update a box. And no, this is not a spoof.
Am I the only one seeing messages like this?
By the way, Josie and the Pussycats kicked ass again. :-)
