Tour de France
Neat article about the Tour de France. Specifically:
Consider the numbers behind the Tour de France: 21 days of riding; 2,110 miles; 5,200 calories burned per day; a peak of 1,000 watts output at any given moment (enough juice to run seven iMacs).
One thousand watts peak power output. Wow.

Articles by People Who Just Don't Get It
Via Slashdot: Kieren McCarthy of Techworld writes that Mac OS X is riddled with security holes. Select excepts:
- The five vulnerabilities "may allow hijacking, security bypass, data manipulation, privilege escalation, denial of service and system access". While we're dropping terms, Kieren, let's see if you can come up with a definition for each without Google.
- "In other words, it makes Microsoft's current Sasser problems look no more than a nasty nip." Right, when computers are randomly rebooting and causing capacity problems on corporate networks, we'll refer to it as a "nasty nip" from now on.
- "This strange habit of pretending a big problem is of no significance was also displayed last month" when the MP3 Trojan horse was released. And every time a company's products have security problems, especially one which has a long history of vulnerabilities. Hm.

Gaim Review
Ars Technica has a good review of alternative AIM clients for Windows. It echoes some of my complaints about Trillian, and gives a good rundown on Gaim.
Two minor points: The reviewer praises Trillian for displaying conversation history, but apparently didn't notice that Gaim has the same functionality in a vendor plugin. He also calls it "GAIM", which doesn't exist according to the Gaim developers (copyright concerns).

KEXP, Listener-supported Radio
I think I originally found KEXP from someone's signature on Slashdot. The station is based in Seattle, but webcasts in many different formats. While I don't listen all that often, when I do I enjoy their programming. It's a nice break from the Clear Channel radio we can get over the airwaves in Gainesville. Best of all, the station is listener supported - check out this MSNBC article for more.

Public School
I finally went back to read Paul Graham's article, Why Nerds are Unpopular. Graham also put together a response to some common questions raised about his article, Re: Why Nerds are Unpopular. If you get the chance, you should also read The Six-Lesson Schoolteacher by John Taylor Gatto. Like Graham, I don't exactly believe that the public school system was meant to turn out the way it is now. There is definitely a problem with the system, and it seems many educators feel unable to change the system.

Bjorn Lomborg claims in his editorial, "The Environmentalists Are Wrong", that it is "[o]nly when people are rich enough to feed themselves [that] they begin to think about the effect of their actions on the world around them and on future generations". Makes me wonder why I see so many sport-utility vehicles.
