Interests:
I am a Professor of Psychology at the University of
Florida.
My primary scholarly activity is in the field of the History of
Psychology. Although I work mostly in the history of the areas of
comparative and
experimental
psychology and related parts of the biological sciences, I
also
have interests in the broader history of psychology. For a major
project, I recntly completed a soon-to-be-published history of the
Yerkes Laboratories of
Primate
Biology as they existed in Orange Park, Florida 1930-1965. I am also
co-editing a volume of Portraits of
Pioneers in Psychology. I also
work on many smaller projects dealing with (a) the careers and
work of many scientists
who
worked in this general field and in the contextual factors that
affected
that work, (b) the history of the institutions of psychology and
Animal Behavior Studies, and (c) assorted topics in the history of
these fields.. I also serve as historian or archivist
for
Divisions 1, 6, and 26 of the American Psychological Association, the
Animal
Behavior Society, and the Psychonomic Society.
For much of my career I functioned as a
practicing
comparative psychologist and I retain strong interests in that field
although
I no longer do active laboratory research therein. My primary
work
in this field has been in the areas of reproductive and social behavior
in various species of animals.
Outside of academic work I enjoy such pastimes as opera, baseball, jazz concerts, and photography.
