Personal Information

I am 26 years old and currently a graduate student at the University of Florida, finishing up my Ph.D. in Astronomy this summer, with a minor in computer science. I also went to UF for college and graduated in May 1999 with a double major in astronomy and physics and received my masters degree in December 2002 in astronomy with a computer science minor. I went to high school at Seneca High in Clemson, SC, where both my parents work at Clemson University and my sister went to school there.

I am a huge sports fan. Basketball has always been my favorite sport to play and the sport I'm best at. I also like to play baseball, football, tennis, and most other sports. College b-ball is my favorite sport to watch, followed by college football and baseball. My favorite college teams are of course the Florida Gators and Clemson Tigers, and my favorite baseball team is the St. Louis Cardinals. My favorite athletes of all-time are Magic Johnson and Mark McGwire. I am also into the history of sports, particularly baseball and basketball, which is why I came up with my A Century of Sports page. I did a lot of research and tried to come up with an unbiased list of the greatest athletes, teams, games, and moments of the century.

I have also always liked to program computers, and I think I'll end up as a programmer, either in astronomy or otherwise. I know about a dozen programming languages, but my favorites are IDL for scientific programs and java for applications. My favorite TV show is the Simpsons, the longest running comedy ever...woohoo! I also like to go out, drink beer, and have fun (which is part of the reason I haven't updated these pages often recently).

My research in astronomy centers around quasars, the most distant objects in the universe. Quasars are very young galaxies (we're looking at them as they were billions of years ago) with huge black holes at their centers that output a tremendous amount of energy. I am doing research on the metallicity, or percent of matter that is made of elements other than hydrogen and helium, of quasars.
