Career Highlights
- 1984-85: Selected 13th in the NBA draft by the Utah Jazz after averaging
18.7 ppg in three collegiate seasons.
- 1985-86: Averaged 14.9 ppg, 8.9 rpg, and shot .496 from the field in
his rookie year. Helped the Jazz advance to the playoffs where they
lost to Dallas in the 4 games in the first round. Malone averaged 21.8
ppg and 7.5 rpg in the playoffs.
- 1986-87: Led the Jazz in scoring (21.7 ppg) and rebounding (10.4
rpg) in only his second season. Led the Jazz back to the playoffs and
averaged 20 ppg and 9.6 rpg in their first round loss to the
Warriors.
- 1987-88: Finished 5th in the league in scoring (27.7 ppg) and 4th in
rebounding with a career-high 12.0 rpg. Along with teammate John
Stockton (who moved into a starting role this season), was named to the
All-NBA Second Team and was on the All-Star team. Led the Jazz to a
first round victory over Portland in the playoffs. The Jazz then took
the defending champion Lakers to a seventh game before losing 109-98.
Malone averaged 29.7 ppg and 11.8 rpg in the two series.
- 1988-89: "The Mailman" averaged 29.1 points (2nd in the NBA) and
10.7 rebounds per game (5th). Earned MVP honors at the All-Star Game,
scoring 28 points on 12-17 from the field. Named to the All-NBA First
Team for the first time in his career and finished 3rd in the MVP
balloting. The Jazz lost to Golden State in the first round of the
playoffs, but Malone averaged 30.7 points and 16.3 rebounds per game.
- 1989-90: Named to the All-Star team and All-NBA First Team again.
Finished 2nd in the league in scoring with a career-high 31.0 ppg, 4th
in rebounding (11.1 rpg), and 4th in FG pct (.562). The Jazz once again
lost in the first found, this time to Phoenix.
- 1990-91: Malone made his 4th straight All-Star appearance and
averaged 29.0 ppg and 11.8 rpg during the regular season. Led the Jazz
to a 4 game win over Phoenix in the first round of the playoffs before
losing to Portland in 5 games in the Conference Semis. Averaged a
career-high 13.3 rpg in the playoffs.
- 1991-92: Finished 2nd in the NBA in scoring (28.0 ppg) and 9th in
rebounding (11.2 rpg) and was named to the All-NBA First Team for the
4th consecutive year. Carried the Jazz all the way to the Conference
Finals, where they lost to Portland in six games. Malone averaged 29.1
ppg, 11.3 rpg, and shot .521 from the field in the playoffs. Played on
the 1992 Olympic team with teammate John Stockton, and won a gold
medal.
- 1992-93: Finished in the top 10 in the NBA in scoring (27.0 ppg,
3rd), rebounding (11.2 rpg, 10th), and FG pct (.552, 6th). Passed Mark
Eaton to become the Jazz's all-time leading rebounder. The Jazz lost to
Seattle in 5 games in the first round of the playoffs.
- 1993-94: Led the Jazz in scoring (25.2 ppg), rebounding (11.5 rpg),
and blocks (126). Helped lead the Jazz to the Western Conference
Finals, where they lost to Houston in 5 games. Averaged 27.1 ppg in the
playoffs.
- 1994-95: Finished 4th in the league in scoring (26.7 ppg) and 9th in
rebounding (10.6 rpg), while shooting .536 from the field. Led Utah to
a franchise record 60 wins, including a 15-game road winning streak, the
2nd longest in NBA history. On January 20 vs Cleveland, he became the
19th player in NBA history to reach 20,000 career points. Was once
again named to the All-NBA First Team and finished 3rd in MVP voting.
- 1995-96: Named to the All-NBA First team for the 8th straight year
and the All-Star team for the 9th straight year. Finished 4th in the
league with 25.8 ppg and 11th with 9.8 rpg. He scored over 2,000 points
for the 9th straight season and moved into 11th place on the all-time
scoring list with 23,325 career points. Led the Jazz to the Western
Conference Finals, averaging 26.5 ppg and 10.3 rpg in the playoffs. Won
his second gold medal at the Olympics in Atlanta.
