Hewitt defeats Sampras to win US Open

For the second straight year, Pets Sampras fell one match short of winning his 5th US Open. 20 year old Australian Lleyton Hewitt, the #4 seed, beat the 30 year old Sampras 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-1 to win his first ever Grand Slam championship. Sampras, who had not had his server broken for 87 straight service games dating back to the second round, was broken by Hewitt in the first game of the match. Hewitt went on to amazaingly break Sampras's serve 5 times in the final two sets as Hewitt made only 3 unforced errors in those two sets. Sampras, tennis's all-time Grand Slam champion, did not win a Grand Slam title all year, for the first time in 8 years. Hewitt defeated Yevgeny Kafelnikov in straight sets and Sampras beat defending champion Marat Safin in straight sets to reach the finals.
