Buffy the Vampire Slayer |
|
The ShowBuffy the Vampire Slayer is the extremely well-written spin-off of the mediocre movie of the same name. In the mythology of the Buffyverse, demons walked the Earth for untold eons before they began to lose their hold on this dimension and the way was made for mortal man. One of the last demons to leave this dimension fed off a human, mixed their blood. He became a human form possessed by the demon. He bit another and another, and so vampires spread. To combat this spread of evil, the Slayer was created. One girl in all the world gifted with the strength and skill to battle the vampires and demons of the world. When one Slayer dies, the next is called. Although her power was originally rooted in darkness, she is the Champion of good. Slayers are usually Chosen very young, around 15, and rarely live to the age of 18. As long as the Slayer has been around, the Watcher's Council has existed to find potential Slayers, and guide and train them to fight the forces of evil.Buffy is a very unconventional Slayer. First, she was not identified by the Watcher's Council until after she was Chosen, and thus had no prior training. Secondly, in the first episode of the show, she meets Xander Harris and Willow Rosenburg, who find out that Buffy is the Slayer. The Slayer is supposed to work alone, but Buffy gains strength from her friends. She is aided by a mysterious man who calls himself Angel. It turns out halfway through the first season that Angel is a vampire, formerly known as Angelus, who was one of the most brutal, viscious vampires in history for 150 years until he killed a gypsy girl. Her family cursed him by restoring his soul, making him suffer though the knowledge of the thousands of people he had murdered. Angel has decided to join the forces of good in the fight against evil. Buffy takes place in Sunnydale, CA, supposedly about two hours north of LA. Buffy is now in its seventh and final season. To go into the storyline would require way too much space here, so check out the episode guides. Buffy is a show that rewards people for paying attention. Events can be foreshadowed three or more seasons in advance. It is a very complex, well written, and well planned out story by creator/writer/director Joss Whedon, and benefits from a great ensemble cast, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. |
