:: My Story ::
Short Version

From the ancient cypress swamps of Wewahitchka, Florida, Chester Udell is a graduate of Stetson University in Music/Digital Arts (2005) where he studied under Kari Juusela, Mike DeMurga, and Nathan Wolek. He received a degree in Masters of Music Composition at the University of Florida (2008) and a Ph.D. in Composition with emphasis in Electrical Engineering under James Paul Sain, Paul Koonce, Paul Richards (music), Karl Gugel, and Antonio A. Arroyo (EE). Currently serving as instructor of Music Technology and Intermedia at the University of Oregon, he composes music for both electroacoustic and acoustic mediums, creates new wireless gestural control interfaces using emerging bleeding-edge MEMS technology, and designs autonomous robotic musical agents.

Current and past Interests

:: Autonomous Musical Agents. Please see my Intelligent Machine Design link.

:: Dissertation Topic: Towards Intelligent Musical Instruments. The design of a new Wireless, Modular micro-interfaces for musical instruments.

:: Field Recording, Acoustic Ecology.

:: Interactivity. Although I have compose often for "fixed" midea, my background was almost exclusively real-time interactive performances using human/computer, human/human, and human/human ensemble/computers improvisational models. I plan to extend this paradigm in my current music robot project to a human/machine model.

:: Electrical Engineering. The cognate for my Ph.D. studies in Music Composition integrates EE through the University of Florida, one of the Premire EE programs in the country. This includes courses in Digital Logic, Microprocessors, and Intelligent Machine Design. Because of this exposure, I have been able to create novel human-computer interfaces that facilitate interactive collaborations between human and computer or networked musicians to engage in meaningful Electroacousitc dialogue - and also to explore cross modal experiences between gesture and sound.
