Smathers Library Join the staff of the Smathers Library as they celebrate the launch of the Jim Haskins collection. Jim Haskins was the author of over one hundred books and has an unrivaled background in writing African-American nonfiction for young readers. Monday, February 4 Showtime at the Swamp: Variety Show | 8pm in Grand Ballroom Come out and see who was chosen by the UF community, via Youtube performances, to perform in Showtime in the Swamp. Tuesday, February 5 (also Feb. 12, 19, & 26) Sophistication is… | 11 am at Reitz Union Colonnade Co-sponsored by RUB and Chomp the Vote Sophistication is…is a weekly series of events that focus on health, beauty, politics, knowledge, and culture. From free makeovers to information on the 2008 Presidential Election, Sophistication is will cover a wide range of topics. All events will take place on the Reitz Union Colonnade. Tuesday, February 5 Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. & Alpha Epsilon Pi, Fraternity Inc. presents... "The Plight of the Persecuted Minority" | 7pm at Location TBA In a strategic partnership Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity Inc. have combined on the account of a common struggle. This forum speaks on how the historical background of Blacks and Jews, and how our "stories" have been intertwined, for the good of civilization. Throughout history both groups have shared the plight of the persecuted minority. Join the gentlemen of these two organizations as we unite to teach and share our experiences as well as hear your experiences. Wednesday, February 6 (also Feb. 13, 20, & 27) Lunch at the IBC | 11am at Institute of Black Culture Co-sponsored by the Institute of Black Culture, Gatorwell, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc, and Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, Inc. Lunch at the IBC is a weekly lunch series that takes place from 11am - 1pm every Wednesday. You can come eat, enjoy a good discussion and explore the IBC. Thursday, February 7 Museum Nights Presents: Art from the Eyes of Our Own | 6pm in Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art Co-sponsored by Museum Nights, Blacklisted and Student Government's Multicultural Affairs Cabinet The Harlem Renaissance was an explosion of black literature, art, music, thought and more which opened the doorway to mainstream black expression. Please join us as our event takes a look back to this time period and celebrates the achievements made by the trailblazers of the Harlem Renaissance, with guided museum tours, folklorist, and food. Thursday, February 7 Health Occupations Students of America presents..."United We Learn, Together We Stand for Awareness" at 7pm at Location TBA This forum will focus on the history of HIV/AIDS, statistics of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, methods of transmission, etc. It will be an interactive forum that will not only bring you awareness about HIV/AIDS but it will most importantly give you an opportunity to find ways to use what you learned to spread awareness about this epidemic. Wednesday, February 20 Game Show, 8pm Orange and Brew Want to test your knowledge on categories such as music, sports, black history, and anything else? Well join the Black History Month committee as we present our annual Game Show. Put your brain to work for a chance to win our grand prize. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20 at the Orange and Brew. There will be six teams of 5 competing and pre-registration is required, so hurry and reserve your team's spot today! Despite this popularity, there is speculation and controversy; from qualifications of his "blackness" to his seniority in government and policy. This forum will address the question, should his skin color outweigh his qualifications as a potential leader in this society and government? Friday, February 22 "Reclaiming the Set" FISS Weekend Kick Off, 12pm Turlington Plaza RTS is the official FISS Weekend Kickoff. Stop by Turlington Plaza between classes for free food, prizes, games, and special presentations from various student groups. We will be raising money all weekend for the Southeast Boys and Girls Club, so come have fun and donate for a good cause! Wednesday, February 27 Poetry Night: The Rhapsody Lounge, 7:30pm at Orange and Brew (in Reitz Union) Co-sponsored by Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. Faces Modeling Troupe, and Poets Inc. Come enjoy a classy, sophisticated evening at the Rhapsody Lounge Poetry Night. This is the perfect scene for relaxing with intriguing, live entertainment and casual dining. Talent will be abundant with performances including artistic expressions of poetry and music. Cosmopolitan or cocktail attire is strongly encouraged. First come, first serve seating. Dr. Smith, best known for his work on Celebrity Fit Club, Meet the Faith, and the 50 Million lb Challenge will be discussing health issues in our communities as well as his work and experiences. Friday, February 29 Closing Ceremonies, 6:30pm at Reitz Grand Ballroom The Black History Month Committee will be ending the month much in the same manner it began; with class and sophistication. There will be performances, committee awards, and a faculty and staff recognition. There will be reserved seating for selected persons and the remaining seating will be at a first come first serve basis. Semi-formal attire is strongly encouraged. |

Thursday, January 31 Opening Ceremonies | 7pm in Reitz Union Rion Ballroom Opening Ceremonies serves as the official commencement of Black History Month 2008, Celebrating 30 Years of Sophistication in Black. Come join us in our month-long series designed to educate, empower, and entertain. This event also features free performances and food. Business casual attire is strongly encouraged. Friday, February 1 The Truth College Outreach Ministry presents…A Night of Praise | 6:30pm in Reitz Rion Ballroom Co-sponsored by RUB and UGC "A Night of Praise" will bring pastors, choirs, ministers, psalmists, dancers, and musicians from all across North Central Florida for the sole purpose of engaging the Gainesville area in an evening of worship and praise to the Lord. This very special evening is not a concert, show, or presentation; it is a time for the people of God to express their love and appreciation to the Father through song and the ministered Word. Saturday, February 2 The Walk | 8am at Flavet Field Co-sponsored by Student Government's Health Affairs Cabinet and the American Heart Association and Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, Inc. Please join us in raising money and awareness for our annual Black History Month 3K Walk. This year's charity benefactor will be the American Heart Association's Power to End Stroke Campaign.
