The Black Graduate Student Organization is continuing our Hurricane
Relief Drive for the survivors of Hurricane Katrina who are in
Alachua County. We are asking for your support and help. Please
continue collecting and bringing supplies (toiletries, canned
goods, can openers, clothes, etc.) to the BGSO Cublicle in the
Student Activities Center, Reitz, or at the IBC in the BGSO drop
box. Our Community Service Chair Jackie Olive has delivered the
supplies collected so far to Gainesville Community Ministries
(GCM), the lead organization for distributing supplies to survivors
in Gainesville. We will be dropping off more supplies at the end
of the week. Thank you to everyone who has made donations! And
let's continue our efforts in helping and extending our hearts
to those in need.
If you want to do more, please note that GCM is in need of volunteers.
They expect that 500-1,000 families will be located in short-term
housing in Gainesville over the next year. The director says that
they will all be in others' homes on a short-term basis and then
placed into apartments, habitat homes, etc. on a long-term basis.
For this reason, GCM is in desperate need for volunteers indefinitely
because they collect, sort, and disseminate most of the items
that go to survivors locally. So GCM needs people to do these
things, as well as make coffee, answer phones, intake and deliver
goods. Their hours are 10a-6p, M& S and 10a-5p T-F. Anyone
interested can call Rick LeFave @ 352-378-3654. They are located
@ 5001 NW 34th Street, Ridgeway Village Shopping Center.
