Beer Guts

Welcome to the home of the 1997 Beerguts. For those not familiar, the Beerguts are a flag football team made up of 10 men brought together by two things: football and beer. This year's cast of characters includes:

Doug McCollum
Justin McCollum
Jason Peterson
Bill Pinto
Julius Santiago
Brad Litchfield
Justin Barrett
Vadim Archipov
James Hubin
Brian Clary

This year's road has been long and hard. The Beerguts had lost before they even played. They had signed up on the waiting list hoping that one team would cancel. And as luck usually doesn't have it, that happened when one team didn't show up for its first game. The game went down as a forfeit and the Beerguts were forced to inherit the 0-1 record.

The Beerguts went into Game 2 with one loss and without Julius Santiago and Brian Clary, both of whom would join in time for Game 3. Julius would become the goto guy down the stretch of the season and Brian would later handle right blocker. First game jitters led the Beerguts to a blowout loss, but things would look better.

In Game 3, things didn't look much better even with the addition of two new members. A lack of a game plan plus playing a team from the A League was too much for the Beerguts as they had their second blowout loss in as many games.

Game 4 would be different though. Coach McCollum, who also played wideout, blocker, and rusher, installed his version of the K-Gun offense and a combination man/zone defense that took advantage of the Beerguts' two tall rushers, Brad and Jason. With Jason as the starting quarterback, the offense began to click behind several Peterson to Santiago connections, scoring twice in the 14-0 win.

So After a grueling 1-3 regular season, the Beerguts made it to the playoffs where they raised their play to an even higher level.

In round one, the opponents of the Beerguts didn't show up, so the Beerguts won on a forfeit, but still played with themselves, holding an intrasquad scrimmage for fun and practice.

In round two, the other team showed up, even bringing the right color T-shirts, so the Beerguts played their first playoff game. But our heroes would be without Bill, one of our best wideouts and backup quarterback. Not wanting to deprive Bill of the playoff experience, the Beerguts dug deeper, and with the great play of Vadeem and an emotional goal line stand, they held on to win 13-6.

In round three, the stakes got tougher, as now the competition boasted a 1-3 record instead of the 0-4 records of the first two rounds. Indeed, the game proved tougher as the opposition mimicked Nebraska's offense, and results, at least for the first half. Using a simple double option offense, they rolled up 13 points on the Beerguts in the first 11 minutes, while they held the Beerguts' K-gun offense in check. But at halftime, coach Doug McCollum made some key adjustments, and with some improvisation and luck, the Beerguts scored 26 unanswered points to win 26-13.

All good things must come to an end, and in round four, it was the Beerguts improbable Cindarella run. For the first time all season, the Beerguts took themselves seriously, thinking they might actually make it to the final four. However, these championship visions blinded them from the one thing that had brought them this far: this was fun!
