History & Background

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Florida is a nonprofit organization that works to provide children in the community with meaningful, one-to-one, mentoring relationships with adult, volunteer mentors. Children, Little Brothers or Little Sisters, apply for the program voluntarily, with their caregiver’s approval. All potential mentors submit to background checks, reference checks and interviews to make sure that they are suitable role models. Then, the agency matches children with mentors, Big Brothers or Big Sisters, who enjoy similar activities, and a case manager is assigned to supervise their relationship from beginning to end to ensure its success.

Unlike other nonprofit mentoring agencies, BBBS of Mid-Florida’s services are free, and it offers a program where mentors can meet with children in the community, said Kim Rohrer, case manager. BBBS of Mid-Florida is a United Way organization. It is funded by the United Way, donors, sponsorships, fundraisers and grants, said Tambria Williams, program support coordinator. Although BBBS of Mid-Florida is a subsidiary of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, it does not receive any funding from the national office, Williams said.

BBBS of Mid-Florida, originally named Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Gainesville, was created in 1975. Since its opening, the organization has matched more than a thousand young boys and girls in Alachua County with mentors (“BBBS of Mid- Florida’s Web site,” n.d.). On its 30 th anniversary in 2005, the organization expanded to serve Bradford, Columbia, Gilchrist, Levy and Marion Counties. To more accurately represent its service area, the agency changed its name to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Florida.
